What is the Investor Relations Society?

The Investor Relations Society is the UK’s professional body for investor relations practitioners. Formed in 1980, it has almost 600 members. The Society is a founder member of the Global Investor Relations Network (GIRN) through which it maintains contact with similar societies in Europe, North and South America and the Far East.

Who are its members, and what do they do?

The Society has almost 600 members drawn from corporates and consultancies across the world and includes the majority of the FTSE 100 and a healthy representation from the FTSE 250. Members are involved in managing the relationship and flow of information between listed companies and their investors. Investor Relations Officers’ disciplines include investor relations, finance and corporate affairs as well as company secretariat and other senior executive roles.

What are its objectives?

To promote excellence in investor relations through:

  • Carrying out research, publishing information and providing education and training;
  • Increasing awareness of investor relations techniques and best practice;
  • Providing a forum for members to exchange views and share knowledge and experiences;
  • Representing the views of the members to regulatory bodies, the investment community and government; and
  • Supporting high professional and ethical standards in the practice of investor relations.

What types of membership are available?

There are two main categories of membership.

Full Membership requires at least three years direct IR, or 5 years experience in the Financial Services or passing the CIR or an equivalent qualification (please download membership application form for recognised qualification). Full members are entitled to use the initials MIRS (Member of the Investor Relations Society) after their name and are eligible to apply for Fellowship of the Society (FIRS) and will be judged against rigorous criteria. Full members are also entitled to vote and hold office in the Society, and receive discounts on Society events and initiatives.

Associate Membership is for those people who have just begun a career in IR. It is also for those who are not directly involved in investor relations but work in related disciplines.

Individuals who have made a significant contribution to the Society are invited by the Board to become Honorary Members.

Who runs the Investor Relations Society?

The Investor Relations Society is run by a Board of non-executive directors. In addition to the Board a number of committees and panels steer the day-to-day work of the society. These bodies are made up of volunteers from the Full membership of the Society. The officers of the Investor Relations Society and the other members of the Board are elected annually at the AGM.

Does the Society maintain links with other professional bodies?

As well as its links with other investor relations societies, the IR Society maintains links with other professional bodies through its best practice partners. These professional bodies include the Association of Corporate Treasurers (ACT), The Association of Investment Trust Companies (AITC), The Association of Private Client Investment Managers and Stockbrokers (APCIMS), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA), London Stock Exchange (LSE), National Association of Pension Funds (NAPF), Quoted Companies Alliance (QCA) and the UK Society of Investment Professionals (UKSIP).
