Upcoming events in Scotland

We would like to draw your attention to three joint events due to take place in Scotland in the next three months. These include an evening event involving a panel discussion and debate on Corporate Reputation and Shareholder Value on 15 March and, even sooner, two highly eminent individuals- an MEP and a leading international news editor.

These are as follows:

Dr Kay Swinburne, MEP- “Brussels Update” Breakfast Session (08.15 to 09.30)

28 February, 2012

Kay will comment on current EU regulation affecting financial services and investor relations, including The European Market Infrastructure Regulation (EMIR) and The Transparency Directive.

Dr Swinburne was elected as Conservative MEP for Wales in July 2009. Her academic qualifications include a degree in Biochemistry and Microbiology followed by a Ph.D. in medical research and an MBA. A successful career in investment banking has given her in-depth knowledge of the global financial markets, specialising in advisory work for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, including M& A, venture capital investments, mezzanine financing and IPOs.

This, combined with her experience advising businesses in Europe and the US, led to her appointment as Coordinator of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee for the Conservative and Reformist Grouping in the European Parliament, as well as UK Conservative Spokesman. Other responsibilities include being a member of the European Economic Area delegation, member of the EuroMed delegation and a substitute member on the Palestinian delegation. Dr Swinburne also serves as a Welsh Conservative Party Board Member.

This is a Joint Event with Scottish Financial Enterprise and The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland.

Mr Lionel Barber, Editor of the FT - “FT’s view of global issues”.

2 March, 2012

As editor (appointed in 2005), Lionel Barber has pioneered the concept of the integrated newsroom, and the FT has solidified its position as one of the first traditional publishers to successfully transform itself into a profitable and multi-channel content business, with a combined daily readership of 2.1 m. – all during the largest financial crisis of our time and dramatic upheavals in the media landscape.

The FT has won numerous global awards for its quality journalism, including three newspaper of the year awards (2008), which recognised the FT’s role ‘as a 21st century news organisation.

Barber has interviewed many of the top leaders in global politics and has also co-written several books and lectures widely on US foreign policy, transatlantic relations, European security and monetary union throughout the world. He has become one of the most influential voices in the world and is frequently sought after to speak at and attend high level gatherings around the world,  delivering Fulbright speech last September on the “future of newspapers,” and, earlier in 2011, The Hugh Cudlipp Lecture at the London College of Communication. His speech, “The Business of Journalism: a View from the Frontline,” garnered media attention worldwide.

In his career, Barber has received several distinguished awards including the St. George Society Medal of Honour (2009) for his contribution to journalism in the transatlantic community, named one of the 50 most influential personalities in Europe by European Voice (2001), one of the 101 most influential Europeans by Le Nouvel Observateur (1998), The Young Journalist of the Year in the British Press Awards (1981) and Laurence Stern Fellow at the Washington Post (1985).

This is a Joint Event with The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, The CFA Society of the UK and The Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment.
